THE PRESENCE OF CONFEDERATED SHIPS IN THE AZORES

6 de December, 2020

Today, in the year 1889, Jefferson Davis, the famous leader of the Confederate States of America, better known as simply Confederation, died.

The Confederation arose due to the problem of slavery in the USA in the 1800’s, because part of the country, many states had slavery and depended on it for their economies, producing a lot of tobacco, and among other products, but especially cotton. In turn, the north had industries and did not need slaves. This subject had already divided the country for many years, and in 1861 the American Civil War began, which would last until 1865, with Abraham Lincoln leading the states of the Union, and Jefferson Davis leading the states of the Confederacy. The Union would win the war and end slavery in the USA!

Did you know that the effects of this conflict reached the Azores?! A Confederate ship that had left North Carolina (southern state) for Liverpool, England ended up in Horta (Faial) for a week for repairs. The Confederates managed to obtain coal in the Azores, and they achieved this thanks to English support.

It was in Terceira, Azores, that the warship C.S.S.Alabama was passed into the hands of the Confederate. Alabama had a career of 22 months and sank or captured 65 Union ships! In 1862, near Flores he captured and burned several American whaling ships!

The Union ship that would sink it was the USS Kearsarge which also passed through the Azores!
