During our visit to the island of Faial last week to present the book ‘Asas da Maravilha’ (Wings of Wonder), we had the honour of meeting with the Regional Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities, Dr Paulo Estevão, to sign a new protocol, the aims of which are to renew our commitment to the Diaspora and the Azores.
The new protocol was signed taking into account:
1. The importance of promoting the well-being, integration and rights of Azorean emigrants in host communities and their descendants and those who have returned to the Azores;
2. The need and interest in reinforcing and strengthening cultural, social and economic ties between Azorean emigrants, between communities of Azorean origin and the Azores;
3. The common interest in implementing initiatives that benefit the communities of Azorean emigrants in the host society and emigrants returning to the Azores;
4. The common interest in the development of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, in preserving its identity and publicising its cultural values, and in social solidarity.
May we continue to work together to ensure that our Azorean identity flourishes and that the Azorean spirit lives on, generation after generation, wherever destiny takes us, and that this partnership between the Government and the Association can play a vital role in developing financial and economic opportunities for the Region with our diaspora and the communities where they live.
