We are in the middle of August, the month when many Azoreans, and emigrants who return here, take their holidays and take the opportunity to rest and enjoy the activities and places that the islands offer. In this hot season, the beach and bathing areas are the most desirable places to spend an excellent hot day.
In São Miguel, the beautiful black sand beaches are a characteristic element of the volcanic origin of São Miguel island, highlighting Ribeira Quente beach, which differs from the others for its water temperature, due to the existence of underwater hydrothermal springs that make the sea water warmer. Praia de Santa Bárbara Beach, in Ribeira Grande is the one with the largest stretch of sand on the island. Praia dos Mosteiros, on the west side of the island has a magnificent sunset.
The island of São Miguel has around 19 beaches, each with its own unique beauty, and there are other bathing areas that attract many bathers.
