Have you heard of Prior Evaristo Gouveia’s Christmas crib? This nativity scene is today in the municipal museum of Ribeira Grande but it was not always here!
The Presépio do Prior Evaristo Gouveia Carreiro was created by the parish priest of the parish of Matriz da Ribeira Grande and by the Catholic Youth of the parish, in 1915 and passed through several places for many years and was only in 1985 that it came to the Casa da Cultura, today the Municipal Museum of Ribeira Grande. Today the man who takes care of the crib in particular is Mr. Emanuel Borges Oliveira.
The crib is divided into two parts. Both sides have movement, and on one side there is a part related to the birth of Jesus Christ, with the traditional figures of the Holy Family, the donkey and the cow and the 3 kings, as well as other figures of people in the different works . On the other side are represented various buildings, traditions and practices of the municipality of Ribeira Grande in the past and in the present, such as religious processions, “romeiros”, whaling in Ribeirinha, etc., and buildings like the bridge of the arches of R. Grande, the Teatro Ribeiragrandense, the town hall, etc.
