The Cultural Group Voz da Saudade was created in 1998, in the city of Gatineau (former city of Hull), in Quebec – Canada, made up of members of the Portuguese community living in this region, the majority being Azoreans. Its current president was one of the founders, António da Silva, a native of Praia da Vitória, Terceira island.
It all started with the reactivation of the Great Immigrant Festival, when António Silva was invited to organize a musical show for it. By gathering a group of people from the Portuguese emigrant community in this region, he managed to form a musical group, with his original compositions, which would later make up the repertoire of the Group. This was the starting point for the creation of the Group Voz da Saudade.
Over the years, the Group Voz da Saudade grew more and more, with the release of CD’s and the performance of several musical shows in Canada, among the emigrant communities, and also in Portugal. It was a group that was destined, through music, to the perseverance of the Portuguese and Azorean culture in the Diaspora. One of their compositions, written by António Silva, was voted by the Permanent Council of the Portuguese Communities to be the official anthem of the Portuguese Communities.
The group had its last performance in Praia da Vitória in 2011.
