OCTOBER 15th: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMAN

15 de October, 2020

Today is the international day of rural woman and we decided to celebrate this day because the Azores in the past were a rural region and agriculture was one of the most important economic activities and where a lot of people used to work!

Back in the day in the Azores, besides making their housework like babysitting and cooking, they also worked in agriculture, used to get water to the fountain, some of them produced handicraft (clay objects, embroidery, weaving, etc.), washed the clothes, and helped in the pig slaughter where they helped by chopping parsley and onion, made the chorizos and blood sausage and they separated the meats.

Did you know that many of these azorean women when they emigrated they had to adapt themselves to different lifes? Take the example of Fall River and New Bedford in USA in which women worked a lot in the textile industry, and in California they worked in agriculture and cattle raising.
