INTERNATIONAL DAY OF POST OFFICES

9 de October, 2021

Today is the world day of post offices! The post offices are a very old activity, existing even before Christ, namely in Ancient Egypt and Rome, and with great importance the Persian Empire in the development of post offices. Did you know that in Portugal post offices were developed in the kingdom of D.Manuel I and the letters were transported by men essencialy on foot? The most important deliveries were transported by men on horseback at high speed and so that’s why the symbol of the company of CTT has a man on horseback!

The post offices were very importante to the emigrants who sent letters to their families and friends who had stayed in their homeland, to give them news and also to express how much they missed them and their land, to know how life was going in the islands and also to send some money to help their families in the Azores.

Nowadays the post offices still have a big importance in the delivery of postal orders, but they lost much importance in what concerns to the communication, because people now rarely send letters because with the new technologies they can establish a direct and faster connection with people, with the possibility to speak and hear, and also so see each other throug video-calls!
