Gonçalo Velho Cabral (1409(?)-1460), a noble man, a knight, a member of the Order of Christ, released cattle in the islands, and still having signs of this costume in places like the port of the rams (Lagoa) and among others and was the first settler of the Azores after being discovered by Diogo de Silves.

He was great-uncle of Pedro Álvares Cabral (discoverer of Brazil), and responsible for the settlement of the islands of Santa Maria and S. Miguel, thus causing Portuguese from the continent to emigrate to the Azores! No wonder the emigration past of the Azores! Our ancestors were already emigrants!

Having been one of the first people to come across the islands in a virgin state even today we can come across landscapes seen by these first settlers!

His statue is in the Gonçalo Velho plaza, in front of the City Doors since 1956.
