Ernesto Faria e Canto da Maia was born in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel in 1890 and passed away in the same city in 1981 and was grandson of Ernesto do Canto. Because his family had some goods and possessions he was able to continue his studies in art.
With only 8 years old he had his first experience with clay from Lagoa, and with it he made some tiny figures made of clay, and with only 12 years old he already painted and modeled!!After finishing high school, he studied Drawing in Lisbon, and later emigrated to France and other countries to keep studying art.
Did you know that he participated in several national and international expositions? Among many, he participated in the Universal Exposition in Paris (1937), the Universal Exposition in New York (1939) and the Portuguese World Exposition (1940), and his sculptures of Fernão de Magalhães and Afonso de Alburquerque were awarded with the sculpture prize in Paris in 1937!
