At Christmas time, it is very common among Azoreans to visit the various cribs scattered around the islands, each one with its own characteristics that differ from the others, with a lot of creativity.
Have you visited a crib during these festivities? Have you not? Here are some suggestions of cribs you can visit.
São Miguel:
-Presépio Prior Evaristo Gouveia: this is a busy crib that is installed in the Municipal Museum of Ribeira Grande, which receives many visits this Christmas season, due to the particularity of the figures moving. It is a nativity scene with about 400 pieces made of various materials, especially recyclable and natural ones.
Furnas Nativity Scene: this is one of the most visited Nativity scenes on the island and one of the largest open-air ones in the region. It has around 5000 figures arranged around the Caldeiras das Furnas area.
-Nativity scene at Água Retorta: in this small parish in the municipality of Povoação, there is a Christmas nativity scene made of reused materials and others, where it is possible to see the customs and habits of this parish.
-Crib in Povoação Village: in Povoação, the crib was once again erected in the Municipal Garden and through the streets of the municipality, the crib built in real size and made of cloth, re-presenting old crafts.
-Vila Franca do Campo Crib: this crib is set up in the Largo do Município of Vila Franca do Campo, and is a representation of Bethlehem, at the time of the birth of Baby Jesus. It consists of 50 3D figures, with special emphasis on the buildings there, and recycled and reused materials have been used, such as wood and fabrics.
Crib Casa dos Manaias: the Casa dos Manaias is an occupational centre which has a project for the social inclusion of at-risk or homeless people developed by the Municipality of Ponta Delgada. This nativity scene is made of various materials, mainly of natural and recyclable products.
Presépio da Achadinha: in the parish of Achadinha, in the Nordeste council, there is also a figurative interior nativity scene of this parish. This crib was promoted by the Achadinha parish council, with the brilliant work of José Medeiros, who, every time there are changes in the parish in reality, he also changes the crib.
Terceira:
-Traditional Crib of Santa Luzia: this is a crib elaborated by Eva Rodrigues and António Rebelo that attracts many visitors this Christmas season. It is set up in the community centre, in the parish of Santa Luzia, in Angra do Heroísmo.
São Jorge:
-Presépio Animado da Junta de Freguesia das Velas: traditional nativity scene that is set up in the parish council of Velas, attracting many visitors.
Pico:
-Prepio da família Medeiros: this is a crib that, from year to year receives more and more visitors, as well as its figures. Having as its central theme Pico, its customs and traditions, this crib is admired by all and is located in the village of Valverde.
