CORVO: A SMALL ISLAND WITH GREAT PEOPLE!

Corvo is very known for being the smallest island and with less population of the Azores, however, it’s an Island with a lot to know and see and with a very interesting past!

The islands of Flores and Corvo were discovered in 1452 by Diogo de Teive and João de Teive, and in the end of this century and the beginning of the next one started the settlement of this two islands. In 1570 was constructed the first church in the island, and the people had occupations like fishing, farming and raising cattle.

Did you know that Corvo suffered several times attacks from pirates and privateers? In 1587 Corvo was plundered and its buildings were burned by english privateers, and in 1632, 10 turkish pirate ships attacked the Island and for 11 hours of combat, about 200 people from Corvo repeled the turkish pirates!!

From 1700’s, whaling american ships started to appear in the azorean seas, and with this, know for their bravery, many people from this island started to emigrate to the United States as whalers. From 1864 to 1920, the population went from 900 people to 661 and in 2011 it had 430 people.

Corvo has a lot of different atractions, like the Caldeirão do Corvo, one of the most beautiful of the Azores, the walking trails, the beautiful windmills and also the ecomuseum of Corvo!
