In 2022 we celebrate 500 years since the birth of Gaspar Frutuoso, a renowned Azorean priest, chronicler and historian, who contributed much to Azorean historiography and also to that of Macaronesia. D. in Theology from the University of Salamanca, Gaspar Frutuoso stands out for his work Saudades da Terra, a detailed historical and geographical description of the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands.
In 1565 he was appointed vicar and preacher of the Matriz de Nossa da Estrela da Ribeira Grande, a position he held until his death, devoting himself to parish life and charity. He was buried in the main chapel of his church, having been, later, transferred to the cemetery of Ribeira Grande. In front of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Estrela there is a statue in honour of this priest who did much for the history of his land.
To celebrate the 500 years of Gaspar Frutuoso, the AEAzores is preparing a special program and we invite all to give their ideas!
We are counting on you!
