It is with great honour and satisfaction that we announce that the first stone of the Emigrant Square will be laid on 9 May, at 14:00.
The space to intervene is located inside the urban perimeter of the city of Ribeira Grande, belongs to the parish of Conceição and is inserted in a cadastral structure of rustic characteristics that includes all the north quadrant of Avenida Dr. José Nunes da Ponte. This project arose as a tribute to all Emigrants. With the construction of this imposing Square, we intend that everyone feels the pride and consideration for our Emigrants.
The centre of the Emigrant Square is occupied by the public art piece Saudades da Terra, the same expression as Gaspar Frutuoso – our first illustrious emigrant, son of the Island of São Miguel and vicar of the then town of Ribeira Grande. The work is dedicated to all Ribeira-grandenses and Azoreans scattered in the four corners of the world.
