“The devotion to Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is the most aggregative, dense and transversal of the devotions of the Azores archipelago. Aggregating, because it embraces a community composed of socially, economically, and culturally distinct believers; dense, because it involves sensibilities, acts, consciences, and attitudes of profound complexity; transversal, because, in the categories of Time and Space, it has dynamically survived the vicissitudes of the past centuries until today and has attracted faithful from multiple geographies, which give it the dignity of being a transnational reference and identity mark of the islands, whether Azorean or all the others of the Diaspora. This image and its mystique reside in a house: the Monastery of Our Lady of Hope on the island of São Miguel. Founded in the 16th century, this conventual space houses the reliquary bust of Christological suffering that acquires prominence from the second half of the 17th century and remains alive in the faith of thousands of believers.
