Although in the case of a subject that in recent decades has been largely depth, desire, with this test, give a further contribution to the knowledge of contemporary Portuguese society, through the study of one of the elements that best features: the emigration phenomenon.

Why we have been committed in this analysis, looking through the notes on the development and antiquity of this movement, assess their extension to the different areas of the country in the recent period, but that coincided with an intense phase of Portuguese emigration: the 1955 to 1974.

Although covering the data to official said outputs – and despising so a significant portion of illegal immigrants – believe that the disclosure will, along with other variables, deepen the decisive reasons, social and economic nature, responsible for its genesis – and also to situate the origin of certain communities rooted in different countries of Europe, America and South Africa. Similarly, we hope will help to understand certain manifestations of a cultural nature, presented as genuinely Portuguese, but very different roots, from the Minho or the Azores, the Beiras or Alentejo, Algarve and Madeira. Regions, together with its geographical individuality, have been losing an increasing number of inhabitants, manifesting in some cases very significant preferences.
