7 de December, 2021

Today, in 1889, Jefferson Davis died, the famous leader of the Confederate States of America, better known simply as the Confederacy.

The Confederacy arose during the slavery problem in the USA in the 1800’s, because part of the country, many states had slavery and depended on it for their economies, producing a lot of tobacco, among other products, but especially cotton. In turn, the north had industries and did not need slaves. This issue had divided the country for many years, and in 1861 the American Civil War began, which would last until 1865, with Abraham Lincoln leading the Union states, and Jefferson Davis leading the Confederate states. The Union would win the war and put an end to slavery in the US!!!

Did you know that the effects of this conflict reached the Azores? A Confederate ship that had sailed from North Carolina (a southern state) to Liverpool, England even stopped at Horta (Faial) for a week for repairs. The Confederates were able to obtain coal in the Azores, and they managed this thanks to English support.

Battle between the C.S.S. Alabama and the USS Kearsarge.

It was at Terceira, Azores, that the C.S.S. Alabama passed into Confederate hands as a warship. The Alabama had a career of 22 months and sank or captured 65 Union ships!!! In 1862, near Flores she captured and torched several American whaling ships!

The Union ship that would sink it was the USS Kearsarge which also passed by the Azores!
