Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays in the United States and its main objective is to “thank”.
Thanksgiving always takes place on the fourth Thursday of November. There is no historical consensus on where and when the first Thanksgiving meal took place in America, but the original celebration is generally considered to have occurred in 1621 in the region where Plymouth, Massachusetts is today.
After the Mayflower ship arrived at Plymouth Rock in late 1620. English pilgrims lost 46 of their 102 original settlers, but with the help of the Wampanoag Indians, they learned to take better care of their crops and survive the cold of the first winter in America. In the following year they managed to produce an abundant harvest and decided to celebrate and to show their gratitude to the natives for their precious help, the Indians were invited to attend a great banquet and thus the tradition was born that remains alive today.
Today, although Azorean emigrants have largely maintained Azorean culture, they have continued to adapt some American customs, so many emigrants and their descendants celebrate Thanksgiving Day and on this day, like the Americans, they gather their families and friends and are grateful for all the good things they have had, and turkey can never be missing at the table!
