JORGE FERREIRA – AMBASSADOR OF PORTUGUESE MUSIC IN THE WORLD

Jorge Ferreira, famous Azorean singer and emigrant in the USA turned 67 on the 5th of February. We wish this prestigious artist a happy birthday with much health and happiness, many more years of success. He has been and continues to be a diffuser of the Portuguese and Azorean culture, in the field of music, among the Portuguese communities in the USA, but also in Canada, Bermuda, among many other places.

Born in Ajuda da Bretanha, São Miguel Island, Jorge Ferreira emigrated to the USA, where he began his career in music, becoming a renowned Portuguese singer, much loved among the Portuguese and their emigrants. As the author-interpreter of his songs, he is considered the ambassador of Portuguese music in the world, with more than 5 million records sold. His repertoire includes more than 45 records, 24 of which have been awarded gold and 14 platinum.

When he arrived in the USA he decided to join musical groups in Fall River, namely the “Banda Santo Cristo”, the “Banda de Nossa Senhora da Luz” and also the bands “Jaywalkers”, “Sunrise, Sunset”, and even lead bands, such as “Vibrations”, where he released several themes. From the 80’s onwards, his work became more and more recognised with the release of his songs and albums which achieved enormous success, not only among the Portuguese emigrated community, but also in Portugal, especially in the Azores.

Among many successful songs, “Amar Como Jesus Amou”, “Carro Preto”, “Mãe, Mãe, já partiste”, “Papai”, “A Portuguesa é a mais Linda”, “Não há gente como gente”, “Açoriano de Raíz”, among others stand out. Besides all this repertoire, Jorge Ferreira is one of the most famous singers to the challenge with his desgarradas, having released the album “Canta com os Amigos – Desgarradas inéditas”, in 2014.
