João Rodrigues Cabrilho (1499-1543) was a portuguese navigator and explorer, working for Spain, who explored the western coast of North America and was the first portuguese and european to set foot in California!!
Did you knew that he participated in several adventures and expeditions with the spanish conqueror Hernán Cortes in the conquests in Central America, and got involved in fights against fearless people like the Aztecs?!
Years later, in 1800’s many azoreans started to emigrate to California, first in the search for the famous californian gold, and then starting to work in different areas like whaling, fishing, in dairy, factory workers, masons, in animal ranches, agriculture, and many started their own businesses! What an adventurous people!
To California they took they culture with them, and so, to get united and preserve their traditions they continued to celebrate the Holy Ghost feasts, starting the first one in 1882 with the foundation of the Brotherhood of The Divine Holy Ghost of Alvarado Street in San Leandro.
