BRAZIL’S DAY – 7 SEPTEMBER

27 de October, 2021

It was on 7 September 1822 that Brazil gained its independence, with the GRITO DO IPIRANGA given by Pedro, the future Emperor of Brazil, on the banks of the Ipiranga River, which put an end to 322 years of colonial domination by Portugal.
Brazil thus became a vast territory left to its own devices which continued to receive waves of emigrants, including Azoreans, many of whom were mostly farmers, carpenters, fishermen or butchers, who left in the hope of finding a better life. Between 1850 and 1874, around 10,000 Azoreans emigrated to Brazil, settling in Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Baía, Ceará, Pará and Pernambuco. These places retain a cultural value and Azorean traditions that are still lived among the Azorean communities.
To all Azoreans and their descendants in Brazil, a happy Brazilian Independence Day.
