It is with great pleasure that the AEAzores held yesterday, March 8th, International Women’s Day, the conference “WOMEN IN THE AZORES AND IN COMMUNITIES” which, besides celebrating this special day dedicated to all women in the world, also served to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Meeting “WOMEN IN THE AZORES AND IN COMMUNITIES” It also served to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the meeting “WOMEN IN THE AZORES AND IN THE COMMUNITIES”, held at the University of the Azores and to pay homage to the mentor of this meeting, in 2001, Professor Rosa Simas, a great woman who gave a lot to the Azorean community in the Diaspora and Azores, as a professor and researcher.
This event took place in the Ribeiragrandese Theatre, in the city of Ribeira Grande, attended by Professor Rosa Simas, the Mayor of Ribeira Grande, Alexandre Gaudêncio, the Regional Director of Communities, José Andrade, as well as other members that collaborated for the good functioning of the event. Due to the pandemic situation, it was not possible to gather all participants in the same space, so we resorted to online broadcasting, and the event was transmitted live in our social networks.
This meeting brought together virtually a group of women: Manuela Aguiar, Manuela Marujo, Humberta Araújo, Alzira Silva, Deolinda Adão, Glória de Sá, Nisa Remígio and Rosa Simas herself, with highlight to Mr. João Luís Pacheco, who praised the role of Azorean women, throughout history, as emigrants, as well as the valorization of these women and everything they have achieved until today, both in Canada and the United States of America, and in the Azores.
AEAzores would also like to take this opportunity to thank, first of all, the speakers of this meeting who accepted this invitation and gave us the opportunity to know the history of Azorean women and their life experiences in the Diaspora and in the Azores; and all those who collaborated in order to make this event a success.
