DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE EMIGRANT SQUARE
It is with great enthusiasm that AEAzores in collaboration with the Master’s student, Sílvia Tavares are working on the creation of a documentary dedicated to the Emigrant Square, which will soon be one year since its inauguration.
This will be a documentary that will gather testimonies of the main actors of the creation of the Emigrant Square, from its first project idea to its current role and the role it assumes before the Azorean community and the one in the Diaspora, going through all its constructive process, both at the physical level and at the monumental and significant level, in what concerns the homage to the Azorean who emigrated.
The first interview was made to Luís Silva, the creator of the globe that is in the Emigrant Square, through the project “Saudades da Terra”, which later on generated the actual Square and its respective purpose. The second interview was made to the Mayor of Ribeira Grande, Alexandre Gaudêncio, who, as a representative figure of this municipality, contributed to the creation of this monumental square, which, besides being directed to honour the emigrants, also contributed to a new aesthetics of the city itself, and taking Alexandre Gaudêncio’s words: “the intended goal is to turn Ribeira Grande towards the sea”.
