Last June 6 (Regional Holiday), to mark Azorean Day, the Azorean Emigrants Association, in partnership with the São Miguel Island Pilgrims’ Movement, dedicated this important day to the commemorations of the 500 Years of Lenten Pilgrimages, where it promoted two symbolic events about this Azorean tradition.
The event included a photographic exhibition “500 Years of Lenten Pilgrimages: Memories of Laudalino da Ponte”, a display of dozens of photographs by Laudalino da Ponte, which is part of the collection of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Maia. This is an exhibition composed by photographs of several moments of the traditional pilgrimages, such as the walks, family gatherings or visits to the churches of the island of São Miguel, among many others.
To distinguish this commemorative date, a plaque allusive to the 500 Years of Lenten Pilgrimages, with an image executed by the photographer Fernando Resendes, was placed in the Praça do Emigrante.
The event had the support of the City Hall of Ribeira Grande, Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Maia and the Movimento dos Romeiros da Ilha de São Miguel. We had the pleasure to have present in the Emigrant Square, the future Rector of the University of the Azores, Professor Susana Mira Leal, the Regional Director of Communities, José Andrade, President of the Economic and Social Council of the Azores, Gualter Furtado, Professor Lélia Nunes, members and collaborators of the AEAzores, as well as elements of the pilgrimage groups of the parishes of Ribeira Grande.
