It is with sadness that the Association of Azorean Emigrants announces the death of the last living Azorean pioneer in Canada, Mr. Manuel Vieira.
In 1953, Mr. Manuel Vieira, along with 17 brave Azoreans, crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Saturnia, arriving in Canada with only one dream in mind: to find a better life. Thus, this small but significant group of Azoreans paved the way for many, creating the foundations of the community we know and love today.
It’s impossible not to talk about the Azorean community and its descendants in Canada without paying tribute to its pioneers who will forever go down in history.
On behalf of the AEAzores, we extend our condolences to his wife, family, friends and the community in general. Rest in peace, pioneer Mr. Manuel Vieira.
