Largest wheel of chamarritas wins record at Guinness World Records, in Madela, Pico Island

The municipality of Madalena, on the island of Pico, makes history by joining the Guinness World Records this past Sunday (July 23) by beating its old world record for “Largest Wheel of Chamarritas”, at the municipal stadium of Madalena, during the program of the Festivities of the same parish.

With 812 dancers and participants, who came from all the islands of the Azores, this is officially the new world record for the largest Portuguese folk dance, surpassing its predecessor of 544 dancers in 2015.

Dança Chamarrita is known for being a typical tradition of the Azores islands and known for being the only type of spontaneous dance still alive in Portugal.

Known as one of the most beautiful island traditions, this award not only celebrates this Azorean legacy, unifying the various Azorean communities, but also recalls its importance and passage to the younger generations.

On behalf of the Association of Azorean Emigrants, we would like to wish our greatest congratulations to the community of Pico, to all the participants and long live the Azorean traditions!
