MADEIRA DIASPORA INITIATIVE

The Portuguese Institute Beyond Borders will launch on Tuesday (January 17th) the Madeira Diaspora Initiative, a program that will collect oral histories and organize colloquia on the Madeiran diaspora in California and the United States.

PBBI-Fresno State is starting a new oral history initiative and lecture series to emphasize the Madeiran archipelago, sometimes overlooked in the Portuguese diaspora in California.

The initiative has as speakers four personalities linked to the Madeiran diaspora, from various parts of California: the former president of PALCUS (Luso-American Leadership Council) John Bento, from Sacramento, Maria José Rodrigues, who is writing the history of the Portuguese presence in San Diego, Maria Isabel Camacho, who emigrated two decades ago and is in Hayward, and Inês Eiras, who is involved in the community in the East San Francisco Bay Area.

The event will be via Zoom and Facebook Live through the PBBI-Fresno State page.

Join us for a conversation about immigration from the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira to California and the western US.
