Today it’s time to get to know some of the pedestrian trails that exist in Terceira and Santa Maria islands:
On Terceira, the trail of choice that you should not miss when visiting this island is the Algar do Carvão- Furnas do Enxofre Trail, which allows us to visit the two natural monuments of great importance, the Algar do Carvão and the Furnas do Enxofre fumaroles field.
The trail of Rocha do Chambre is a trail of medium difficulty that takes us to the interior of the island of Terceira. Another trail that tells us a little of the military history of this island is the São Sebastião Forts Trail, located in the volcanic massif of Cinco Picos, whose walk takes us past traces of ancient maritime defence fortifications from the XVI and XVII centuries, ending in the parish of São Sebastião.
In Angra do Heroísmo you can find the Monte Brasil trail – a geosite formed by an old extinct volcano in the sea that ended up connected to the land, it is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this beautiful trail is built the Fort of São João Baptista, dating from the late sixteenth century, along this trail you can find pieces of anti-aircraft artillery from the 2nd World War, as well as a playground and picnic area.
The island of Santa Maria offers us the North Coast Trail (Trilho da Costa Norte), which takes us on a hike from the village of Bananeiras to Anjos and takes us past Barreiro da Faneca, the site of the last eruptive phase of the island, where reddish-coloured clays predominate. The Pico Alto trail takes us on a hike in a forested area, where along the way we find several natural viewpoints facing various points on the island.
