INTERNATIONAL DAY OF TELEVISION

2 de November, 2021

Today is world television day! World Television Day is not so much a celebration of the tool, but of the philosophy it represents because television represents a symbol of communication and globalization in the world we live in!

In the old days in the Azores, not all people had television and RTP-Açores only appeared in 1975! Before, there was already RTP1, a channel founded in 1957. But did you know that in Terceira there was already television before mainland Portugal? There was American TV in Terceira at the base of Lajes. They already had a radio station since 1947, and the American TV station started in 1954 and was the first TV station in Portuguese territory! American TV in Terceira covered areas such as the base and the area between São Sebastião and Agualva and was thus available until January 2013, the date from which the station started to be confined to the base and to the military neighborhoods *.

Of note is the role of channels such as RTP that have already made documentaries on Azorean and Portuguese emigration as well as the contact they establish with emigrants, including the Atlântida program broadcast by RTP-Açores and also by RTP-Internacional, such as they do it on several occasions, capturing a lot the attention of Azorean emigrants during the festivities of Santo Cristo dos Milagres.
