“This renewed collection, which includes texts on History and Historiography, covers the centuries, from the dawn of discovery and colonization to the incidences of the fresh contemporary era, showing a plurality of nuances, from politics and administration, economy, strategy, population, migratory movements and the organization of society, culture, religion, and daily life. Once again, the coexistence of more specific analyses, which are indispensable in establishing identity, with more general reasoning, which is useful in understanding interdependence, reigns supreme. In the Azores, all of this is determined by the omnipresence of the sea, which historically causes isolation during the long winters, given the territory’s discontinuity and distance from the continents, and gives rise to worldview during the warm summers, the result of being located at a confluence of transatlantic routes, which anchors the progress of globalization. Let us hope that from the reading of these analyses and reflections persists, once again, the conviction of the daily usefulness of historical studies, in the light of the understanding that knowledge of the past facilitates the understanding of the present and assists in the projection of the future.”
