DOMINGOS REBELO: A FAMOUS AZOREAN PAINTER

Domingos Rebelo was born in Ponta Delgada in 1891 and became very well known for having made paintings related to daily life of the azoreans in the past, and painted pictures related with activities like fishing, cattle raising, and also historic episodes!

Did you know that Domingos Rebelo made and participated in several exhibitions in many places like Brazil and California and came to be principal of the Commercial and Industrial school of Ponta Delgada, nowadays the High School Domingos Rebelo in Ponta Delgada?

His most famous work is the picture «Emigrantes» (Emigrants), a picture from the year of 1926 where are present several characteristics of the azorean culture and from São Miguel too, namely, the «Registo do Sr. Santo Cristo dos Milagres», the «viola da terra» (guitar of the land), the people’s clothes, the wicker basket with oranges, the wooden chests were the emigrants took their goods and also it’s important to highlight the scenario behind the figures, the city of Ponta Delgada and its aspect before the construction of the avenue of Infante D.Henrique.
