“No propósito do esclarecimento de mais tempos e de mais matérias do suceder histórico insular, esta renovada coletânea, que inclui textos sobre História e Historiografia, percorre os séculos, dos alvores da descoberta e da colonização até às incidências da frescal contemporaneidade, evidenciando uma pluralidade de matizes, da política e da administração, da economia, da estratégia, da população, dos movimentos migratórios e da organização da sociedade, da cultura, da religião e do quotidiano. De novo, impera a coexistência das análises mais particulares, indispensáveis na fixação da identidade, com os raciocínios mais gerais, úteis no entendimento da interdependência. "This renewed collection, which includes texts on History and Historiography, covers the centuries, from the dawn of the discovery and colonization to the incidences of the fresh contemporary times, highlighting a plurality of nuances, from politics and administration, economy, strategy, population, migratory movements and the organization of society, culture, religion and daily life. Once again, the coexistence of more specific analyses, which are indispensable for establishing identity, with more general reasoning, which is useful for understanding interdependence, is imperative. In the Azores, all this is very much determined by the omnipresence of the sea, which historically causes isolation in the long winters, given the discontinuity of the territory and the distance from the continents, and gives rise to world views in the warm summers, the result of being located at a confluence of transatlantic routes, which anchors the progress of globalisation. Let us hope that from the reading of these analyses and reflections there remains, once again, the conviction of the daily usefulness of historical studies, in the light of the understanding that knowledge of the past facilitates the understanding of the present and assists in the projection of the future".
