500 Years of Azorean Pilgrimages

On June 6th, at 6 p.m., in Praça do Emigrante, the Azorean Emigrants Association will dedicate the Azorean Day to the celebrations of the 500 Years of Lenten Pilgrimages, promoting two symbolic events about this Azorean tradition.
The event will include a photographic exhibition “500 Years of Lenten Pilgrimages: Memories of Laudalino da Ponte”, a display of dozens of photographs by Laudalino da Ponte, which is part of the collection of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Maia. The exhibition will allow visitors to see photographs of various moments of the traditional pilgrimages, such as the walks, family gatherings, or visits to the churches on the island of São Miguel, among many others.
The event has the partnership of the Movimento de Romeiros da Ilha de São Miguel (São Miguel Island Pilgrims’ Movement) that, together with the Azorean Emigrants’ Association, will perpetuate this commemorative date by placing a plaque in the Emigrant Square.
The event has the support of the Ribeira Grande City Hall, Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Maia and the São Miguel Island Pilgrims’ Movement.
