One day, a young boy went to a nearby spring to fetch water for his animals and for domestic chores, when he drank some water and noticed that it tasted strange, like salt water. The young man soon realised that something was not right there and went to tell his neighbours, who did not believe him. Days later, the young man returned to the spring and saw that in the lake in front of the spring, where the water spout ran, fish were jumping into the water and out of the water onto land, where they ended up dying. Definitely convinced that something out of the ordinary was going to happen to his village, he ran off to tell all the villagers, but no one believed him, except his grandfather.

Both the young man and his grandfather tried to warn the population that was always partying, but they would not listen. Until they both decided to climb the highest peak around to see the sea and look to the north, and they managed to spot an island on the horizon, it was the Enchanted Island of Sete Cidades. The old man shouted out in distress for the villagers to all flee to the village, for a great misfortune was approaching. Again, no one paid any attention to the old man and his grandson, who went down to the village to look after their animals and their immediate lives.

After two days nothing happened, when the young man and his grandfather decided to leave the village to go to the next village to do some business. They were away for a few days and when they returned, their village had disappeared, there were new mountains and in the place of the village was a large lake (the Lagoa das Furnas). There was a catastrophe that buried the village forever.

According to legend, it is believed that the villagers still live under the lake and that the fumaroles there are the people cooking at the bottom.

      Previous

      Next

The legend of Furnas Lake is an oral tradition that, in a certain way, explains the geological formations left on the islands by volcanoes.
