S\u00e3o Jorge Island is especially known for its cheese, but also for the beauty of its faj\u00e3s! This island is endowed with a vast and rich natural patrimony that differentiates it from the other islands of the archipelago, especially the fact that it does not have beaches due to its rocky coast with high cliffs, but in compensation it has countless faj\u00e3s that make it unique. Most of these faj\u00e3s are inhabited, but of complicated access. Among many, Faj\u00e3 do Ouvidor, one of the largest on the island; Faj\u00e3 das Almas; Faj\u00e3 dos Vimes; Faj\u00e3 de S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o, Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres; and Faj\u00e3 da Caldeira do Santo Cristo stand out.
Many of the existing trails in S\u00e3o Jorge are access trails to the faj\u00e3s, as is the case of the trail Pico do Pedro – Pico da Esperan\u00e7a – Faj\u00e3 do Ouvidor; Serra do Topo- Caldeira do Santo Cristo – Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres; Faj\u00e3 de S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o – Lourais – Faj\u00e3 dos Vimes. The first trail gives us the possibility to go through Pico da Esperan\u00e7a, the highest area of S\u00e3o Jorge island, reaching the beautiful Faj\u00e3 do Ouvidor, which differs from the other faj\u00e3s because it is a large lava faj\u00e3 and not a detritic one. On this trail we pass through forest areas, agricultural paths and some stretches of tarmac road. It is also here that we can find the wonderful Po\u00e7a de Sim\u00e3o Dias, a natural pool with crystal clear water and mild temperature, which provides very pleasant bathing.
The Serra do Topo- Caldeira do Santo Cristo- Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres trail is one of the most visited because it is on this trail that we find the area classified as protected landscape, Lagoa da Caldeira do Santo Cristo and also its small village and church of devotion to Senhor Santo Cristo. In this lagoon it is possible to find clams.<\/p>
