The island of S\u00e3o Jorge is one of the islands of the central group and is well known for its cheese!<\/p>

S\u00e3o Jorge has a very interesting heritage and history! It should be noted that it was discovered in the 1400’s. In 1500’s and 1600’s the island was attacked by pirates and privateers!<\/p>

Later, in the 1800’s with the Portuguese civil war, there was a fight, namely in Ladeira do Gato and before the autonomy in the 70’s S\u00e3o Jorge was integrated in the district of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo!<\/p>

S\u00e3o Jorge has always been a very ruralized island, with livestock, agriculture, cheese making and fishing as main activities still today, but also tourism and did you know that like other islands in the Azores they hunted whales?<\/p>
