Today, 110 years have passed since Portugal ceased to be a monarchy and ruled by kings, and officially became a republic and began to have presidents, and also adopted the anthem and the flag still used today.<\/p>

Did you know that there were two azoreans who were very importante in this step of the History of Portugal? And both of them have their graves with their remains in the National Pantheon, place reserved for some of the most important figures of the portuguese history? The azoreans have always been a heroic people and with a great character!!<\/p>

Te\u00f3filo de Braga was born in 1843 in Ponta Delgada, S\u00e3o Miguel and emigrated to Coimbra to study Law there. He was elected as a republican deputy while there was the Monarchy, but in October 5th he became provisional president for almost a year, and in 1915 he became the 2nd<\/sup> president of the Republic.<\/p>

Manuel de Arriaga was born in 1840 in Horta, Faial, and he also emigrated to Coimbra to study Law and there he transformed himself into a republican. In 1883 he was proclamed deputy, and became the 2nd<\/sup> republican deputy in the portuguese parliament!! He was dean of the University of Coimbra and elected as the 1st<\/sup> president of the Republic in 1911, position held till 1915.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
