The legal regime for census of residents abroad, which establishes the automatic registration in the electoral rolls to holders of citizen’s card, will be subject to approval, in the specialty, in the Parliamentary Affairs Committee. Constitutional, on the 24th of this month.
At the hearing of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities to the Permanent Council of the Council of Portuguese Communities, the president of the parliamentary committee of the CDS-PP, Nuno Magalhães, stated that “there are prospects that the overall final vote should take 15 days after”.
The automatic census will increase the number of Portuguese voters registered abroad from the current 280,000 to around 1.4 million, according to the State Secretariat for Portuguese Communities, the Directorate General for Consular Affairs and the Portuguese communities, embassies, consular services and the Directorate-General for Internal Administration.
On 24 April, the legislative proposal was unanimously approved by a vote of the working group on amendments to electoral laws and the electoral registration legal regime.
